Description

Poetic Instincts:  A workshop on dance improvisation and contact improvisation

with Chris Aiken & Joerg Hassmann
in Marseille
(March 15-16) & Berlin (March 20-23)

How does one develop the physical skill, the perceptual awareness and the ability to make instinctual and imaginative decisions when improvising a dance?  In this workshop we will share practices that have guided us towards inspired dancing. We will draw upon a variety of contemporary dance methods and practices, particularly contact improvisation, ideokinesis, released-based technique, and dance improvisation. Students will find clear tools to refresh and expand their dancing.

This workshop is part of a research for Chris and Joerg to prepare an improvised performance together. It is designed for those with some experience with dance improvisation or contact improvisation. People with a solid background and interest in CI will have opportunities to explore a compositional mind in dances that keep the shared weight moving.

a little note:
Chris and Joerg have been exploring CI, dance improvisation and performing for more than 20 years. They have been appreciating each others work for a long time and eventually found their first opportunity to work together.

The Performance:

Poetic Instincts: An Evening of Dance Improvisation rooted in real time composition and contact improvisation

This performance is the result of a two weeks research - wondering where the origin lies for those moments and movements in performance that touch us in ways that words and thoughts can't. Chris and Joerg will share the connections, questions, inspirations and challenges they found on their journey of teaching, rehearsing, travelling and letting time pass together. A first meeting on stage that is built on more than twenty years of separate explorations within Contact Improvisation and Dance Improvisation as a performing art.

Chris Aiken is a leading international performer and teacher in the fields of dance improvisation and contact improvisation. His work has evolved through ongoing investigations of dance, performance, design, perception, neuroscience, and imagination.  He has performed and collaborated with many renowned dance artists including Steve Paxton, Kirstie Simson, Nancy Stark Smith, Peter Bingham, Andrew Harwood, Ray Chung and Angie Hauser.  His movement practice has been very much influenced by his study of the Alexander Technique, ecological psychology and ideokinesis.  Chris has received funding by the Guggenheim Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the Bush Foundation and the McKnight Foundation, and he has received commissions from the Walker Art Center, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Dance Theater Workshop and the National Performance Network.  Chris graduated with a BA from Brandeis University, an MFA from the University of Illinois, and is the MFA Director and an Assistant Professor of Dance at Smith College and the Five College Dance Department in Western Massachusetts in the U.S.

Joerg Hassmann is an internationally highly acknowledge teacher of movement technique and Contact Improvisation. CI was the starting point for his dance passion in '92. Soon he was driven by creating dance and theatre pieces, bringing improvisation on stage, which made him perform more than 300 times and let him once win a first price with a CI based duett with Jenny Haack in Kalisz/ Poland. Teaching turned out to be his main passion. Anatomy based movement explorations, contemporary dance, ideas from BMC, Capoeira, play and the joy of discovery became his main influences. He got deep inspirations from Lilo Stahl, Julyen Hamilton, David Zambrano and Frey Faust, but even more from Co-teaching with Mirva Mäkinen, Christine Mauch and Daniel Werner. Eight years ago he started teaching CI training intensive programmes in Berlin together with Daniel Werner, where they developed their systematic approach to contact technique (www.dancecontact.de). He is also involved as the artistic director in the annual Contact Festival “contact-meets-contemporary” in Goettingen/ Germany (www.contact-meets-contemporary.de).
